How does Botox® work? Where is  it used?

Botox® is a purified protein. In cosmetic use it temporarily relaxes muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles and undesirable facial expressions that are caused by muscle movements such as frowning and squinting. Botox® can also be used to lift the brow, sharpen the jawline ( The Nephritis Lift) and to smooth the lines around the eyes and on the forehead. Other typical applications used by Dr. Sweeney are advanced facial sculpting in the neck for bands and lines and in the lower face for vertical lip lines, chin puckering and pebbly texture, marionette lines and to lift the frown from the corners of the mouth. Bunny (nose) lines, nostril flare, drooping nasal tip, gummy smile and square jaw are other satisfying Botox® treatments to consider.

Ultimately, Dr. Sweeney’s goal is to address your concerns  while delivering effective, natural looking treatment results that suit who you are.

What is Botox® treatment like? How long does it last? When can I start?

Not only is a Botox® treatment virtually without discomfort most can return to their usual activities immediately . The injections are with tiny needles. There may be red areas easily covered by make up. You are advised to remain upright for 4 hours following treatment allowing full Botox® absorption in the areas in which it was precisely placed . The onset of Botox® begins within 1-4 days, when muscles start to relax, and are usually full at 14 days. The  benefits last 3-4 months; longer for preventative, anti-aging  treatment results. Treatments can be continued indefinitely with a few exceptions such as becoming pregnant.

A study of twin sisters demonstrated that ongoing benefits continued for more than a decade! Botox® used regularly can help prevent more permanent lines and wrinkles and slow and sometimes reverse aging caused from muscle dynamics in the face and neck. And for more and more people,  concerns focus on prevention before lines or sagging even develop.

Dr. Sweeney recommends starting  Botox® when it’s right for the patient. For some, this might be in their 20’s or 30’s as face and neck expressions or lines can start sooner in life due to lifestyle and genetics.  For others,  it is almost never too late to begin or resume Botox® treatment.

It is no wonder that Botox® either alone or in combination with dermal fillers, The Soft Lift™, is our most popular cosmetic procedure.

Botox® relaxes glabellar frown lines, crow’s feet and nose lines. Look relaxed and smooth.
Botox® does more than fix wrinkles:

Botox® is among the most studied pharmaceuticals. Research shows that it also works to reverse skin aging through increased collagen production and reduced activity of the enzyme that breaks down collagen. It also improves circulation and sebaceous gland density in the skin leading to a hydrated, thicker looking skin in treated areas. A study series of 5 subsequent treatments demonstrated that skin thickness improved sequentially with repeated treatments.

Additionally, Botox® treatment thins the muscles treated- the same thing that happens to your other muscles when you stop going to the gym. The skin in the  areas treated and others that extended beyond the area become smooth as well as thicker.

Over time the chin muscles become dominant causing a resting frown/down turn of the corners of the mouth, shortening of the chin and pebbling, irregular skin contours. Treatment with Botox® in this area is intricate but rewarding.
