Common Questions
Cosmetic Botox is a purified protein which temporarily relaxes muscles and is used for the treatment of wrinkles, lifting the brow and to rebalance facial movement. Botox treatment is Health Canada approved and provides excellent results for frown lines, forehead lines and the lines around the eyes. It may also be used for the lips, neck, jawline and chin – nearly anywhere that lines, puckering or undesirable effects are caused by muscle movement in the face and neck. Our patients love the way it rebalances their facial expressions giving them a more relaxed and rested look while maintaining natural expression.
Botox treatment has a more than 20-year track record for both safety and effectiveness.
There is minimal “downtime”, most patients return to their usual activities after the treatment.

Botox Cosmetic®
Botox® has been used in therapeutic medical treatment since the 1989 and approved for cosmetic use in Canada since 2001. Dr. Maureen Sweeney has been treating patients with Botox® since 2003. Botox ® is a purified protein. In cosmetic application it temporarily relaxes muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles and undesired expressions that are caused by muscle movements such as frowning and squinting. Botox® can also be used to lift the eye brows, sharpen the jawline (The Nefertiti Lift) and to smooth the lines around the eyes and on the forehead. Other applications used by Dr. Sweeney are advanced techniques in the neck for bands, webbing and necklace lines and in the lower face for vertical lip lines, “lip flip”, chin puckering and pebbly texture, marionette lines and to lift the frown from the corners of the mouth. Bunny (nose) lines, nostril flare, drooping nasal tip, gummy smile and square jaw are other Botox® Cosmetic treatments to consider.

Not only is a Botox® treatment virtually without discomfort most people can return to their usual activities immediately . The injections are with tiny needles. There may be red areas easily covered by make up. You are advised to remain upright for 4 hours following treatment allowing full Botox® absorption in the areas in which it was precisely placed.
The onset of Botox® begins within 1-4 days, when muscles start to relax; full effect is at 14 days. The benefits last 3-4 months; longer for preventative, anti-aging treatment goals. Botox® treatments can be continued indefinitely with a few exceptions such as becoming pregnant and in very rare medical conditions.
Dr. Sweeney recommends starting Botox® when it’s right for the patient. For some, this might be in their 20’s or 30’s as face and neck expression lines can start sooner in life for some people. For others, it is almost never too late to begin or resume Botox® treatment.

Botox Theraputic
Botox Therapeutic® is a non-invasive, effective treatment for many medical conditions with a higher than 20-year track record for safety. It has been approved for use in children as young as age two.
Dr. Sweeney was trained in the use of Botox Therapeutic® in 2003. She successfully uses it to treat temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) pain, migraine headache and other forms of a headache and jaw pain, neck and back pain (from muscle tension) as well as for hyperhidrosis (excessive perspiration) of the underarms, palms and soles. The treatment consists of a series of injections either into the affected muscles or area of sweating. The Botox® acts by blocking the communication between the nerve and the muscle or sweat gland by preventing the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from the nerve. Treatment is practically painless as Dr. Sweeney uses the tiniest of the needle and without downtime. Results last 4-6 months. Pain from the condition may be partially or fully improved throughout the therapeutic effect. For many patients, satisfaction is high even without complete resolution of pain because the frequency of analgesic and other medication use drops, loss of productivity and lost work days declines and quality of life improves.
The potential for side effects is low.
Some extended health plans may cover a portion of the treatment cost especially for conditions where Botox Therapeutic® is approved for use such as a migraine headache and hyperhidrosis.
It might be interesting to note that Botox Therapeutic® has been used in other centers to treat spasticity conditions in children, overactive bladder, and prostate enlargement to mention just a few of its other medical applications.
Botox® does more than fix wrinkles:
Botox® lessens negative or unwanted facial expressions, those that may make us look sad, upset or annoyed when that is not how we feel.
Relaxing muscles such as those that cause us to frown can also help us feel better; less stressed or tense.
Botox® used regularly can help prevent more permanent lines and wrinkles and slow and sometimes reverse skin aging in the face and neck. Research showed that skin treated with Botox® had increased collagen production and reduced activity of the enzyme that breaks down collagen. It also improved circulation and sebaceous gland density in the skin leading to a hydrated, thicker looking skin in the treated areas.
After a single treatment a deep line will not disappear but with repeated treatments it will fade and in some areas such as the glabella frown line(s), aka #11’s, lines may disappear. A study series of 5 subsequent treatments demonstrated that skin thickness improved sequentially with the repeated treatment.

Over time the chin muscles become dominant causing a resting frown/down turn of the corners of the mouth, shortening of the chin and pebbling, irregular skin contours. Treatment with Botox® in this area is intricate but rewarding.
