Fall 2007 Newsletter

Introduction

Live Young has now been open in the Sidney location for 1 year and what better time than now to stand back and enjoy our successes and thank those who have made it possible? We have had phenomenal growth this first year and the enthusiasm with which we have been welcomed is beyond anything I could have expected. And it's because of you. Thank you all so much for making it possible with your support and for giving Lucy and I the opportunity not only to meet you but to share with you all we have learned, and keep learning, about staying healthy and looking and feeling great.

In this newsletter I would also like to welcome and introduce you to Narina Prokosch, owner of Victoria Wellness Professionals, who will be a regular contributor on a subject dear to my heart- fitness. For those of you who don't know Narina, she offers an amazing combination of skills; she is not only a nurse and experienced personal trainer but was a body builder as well. Her fitness facility is the only one of its kind in Victoria offering one-on-one training in a private setting.

Aesthetic News

The aesthetic "side" of Live Young has continued to flourish and not surprisingly our stats are similar to those experienced across North America. For 2006 the US stats are:

  • BOTOX - 3,181,592 procedures
  • Hyaluronic acid - 1,593,554 procedures
  • and Laser Hair Removal - 1,475,296 procedures

We couldn't find 2006 figures for Canada but over 1/2 a million procedures were performed in 2005 and the top 3 non-surgical procedures in Canada are also BOTOX, dermal fillers and laser hair removal.

As in the rest of the country, BOTOX is our most popular treatment and is increasingly sought out by men and younger women. BOTOX is now considered fairly mainstream by many not only as a way to reverse the signs of aging but as a preventative treatment. The growth in BOTOX use is also fueled by people who are busy working and wish to keep their competitive edge in terms of their appearance and who want to look refreshed and less stressed.

The demand for dermal filers and laser treatments has also grown in my practice although we perform more anti-aging skin treatments than hair removal with the laser. Remarkable improvement can be achieved by adding back lost volume in the cheeks, around the eyes and in the lower face especially if combined with Botox and a series of laser photo rejuvenation treatments. There are few people that I now see that need to be referred to a surgeon.

For a more detailed description of our services check services in detail.

Another exciting new tool you can use to see how you would look with one of these treatments is to create your own before and after pictures. To do so consult either the Allergan or Restylane websites: http://www.juvederm.ca, http://www.restylane.ca

Anti-Aging News

Public awareness of the benefits of preventative health is growing and so too is this part of the Live Young practice. Word of mouth seems to be fueling things for us. As we treat more and more patients and as they begin to feel better they spread the word to family and friends - and so it builds. Through a series of consultations patients discover that there is much that can be done to bring back energy and vitality and that by embarking on the Live Young Program they are also doing as much as they can to prevent future disease, disability and dependence. I can't tell you how gratifying it is for me to see how someone's life can be turned around with these programs. Pease feel free to talk to me or Lucy about how this will work for you. Another great way to find out about this new medical specialty is to attend one of our seminars; the next one will be on Nov. 15th. See details under the heading What's New in the right column.

Because this is such a rapidly growing field of knowledge the programs are ever changing. This week Lucy and I are heading off to Salt Lake City for the 2nd of 3 courses I have planned for this year. If it is anything like the 1st I will have lots of new ideas to help you (and me) live longer by living well. I will keep you posted.
