What is resistance training? Which is better - aerobics or weight lifting?

The goal of any exercise program should be the reduction of body fat and the increase of lean muscle tissue. The added benefit of resistance training is a healthy cardiovascular system.

From a purely health perspective, resistance training is proving to be the best all round form of exercise. Since there is a direct correlation between bone mass and muscle mass, an increase in muscle mass is a desired effect. For women, the added benefit of decreased risk of osteoporosis is motivation in itself to participate in some form of resistance training.

Resistance training is just what its name implies. It involves moving a muscle through a full range of motion with added resistance. Muscles respond to stress put upon them by growing larger and stronger. The added benefits of increased strength and flexibility will aid each one of us in our day-to-day lives. Whatever your occupation; whether you play golf, swim or garden, you will notice an improvement in your daily activities.

Another added benefit of resistance training is the increase in lean muscle mass. Another bonus of lean muscle tissue is that is requires more calories to maintain muscle tissue than body fat. Your metabolism runs much higher to maintain muscle tissue, which equates to easily control of body weight.

Don't be afraid of resistance training - it is your best friend!
