Getting started in a Fitness ProgramPresented by: Narina Prokosch, RN, CPT In our last article, we discussed the importance of resistance training or weight lifting. Now we are going to take a look at getting started in a fitness program - where to go, what to look for in a facility and for those of you considering hiring a personal trainer. There are many options to those wishing to get started. Public gyms, rec centers, in home training, boot camps and outdoor training, to list a few. If you are looking at a public gym or rec center make sure you pay a visit during the time you would most likely be attending. There are busy times (7-9 am & 4-7 pm) and slow times at these facilities. . Most facilities now will provide you with an opportunity to attend some complimentary sessions. By all means ask and avail yourself of the opportunity. Do not pick the first facility you visit. List all the facilities that meet your criteria and pay them a visit. If you are seeking the services of a personal trainer, there are some important considerations. Personal training is an unregulated industry. Certifications for personal trainers vary from an Internet certificate with no formal training to a 4-year university degree. There is no government licensing for personal trainers, so it is very much buyer beware. The top three certifications for personal trainers are National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), National Strength and Conditioning Assoc. (NSCA) and American Council on Exercise (ACE). Look for these credentials when interviewing personal trainers. Take the time to interview any prospective trainer. As you can see, there are many options available today when thinking about starting an exercise program. Take the time to investigate each option that you find interesting. Be prepared to invest time and money in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. You won't be disappointed and in return you will be the owner of a healthy and strong body prepared for anything life throws at you!
